We are especially pleased to support The School of St Jude, one of the largest charities of its kind in Africa, in its mission to fight poverty through education in Tanzania.
mdp has supported The School of St Jude in Tanzania for close to 15 years. Since opening for a handful of students in 2002, St Jude’s now supplies free education to 1,800 students a year and employs around 300 staff across three campuses in Arusha, Tanzania.
With 75% of the population living on less than AU$4.20 per day, many Tanzanians live in poverty, and only 30% of secondary age children enrol in school. St Jude’s offers bright and at-risk students the opportunity to complete their education with full academic scholarships, including uniforms, food, water, and health care support.
They started small, but with help from international donors and sponsors, St Jude’s has educated an enormous number of underprivileged students. More recently, they saw the need for added aid as students progressed towards tertiary education. As a result, the Beyond St Jude’s (BSJ) program launched in 2019 when they realised their students needed ongoing support to complete university. Last year, they celebrated 87 students and last month, the first seven St Jude-educated doctors graduated from university.
mdp was beyond proud to read of Beyond St Jude’s first Tertiary graduates becoming doctors, and at a time when there is so much violence and sadness in the world, this is a good news story that shows a little help can go a long way.
mdp is honoured to support The School of St Jude, along with other charities including Save the Children in Ukraine, The UN refugee Agency Australia, St Vincent de Paul, and Anglicare for the current flood disaster in Australia. We regularly match our employees’ donations to show how committed we are to a better future for all, including the bright stars of St Jude’s.
If you would like to make a contribution that has a tangible impact on the lives of Tanzanians, please do so at https://www.schoolofstjude.org/support/donate/.
